Maria Idolina "Nona Duran Garza

Maria Idolina "Nona" Duran Garza passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026, in Denham Springs, Louisiana, at the age of 69, after a long and courageous battle with epilepsy. She is now at peace, free from pain, and forever in the hearts of those who loved her. Nona was born on August 21, 1956, in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico, to Ramon Garza Betancourt and Maria Trinidad Luna Pina. She graduated from the Academy of Professional Studies with a degree in Accounting and Executive Secretary studies and later married Omar Duran Perales, a large animal veterinarian. She is survived by her devoted husband, Omar Duran Perales of Denham Springs, Louisiana; her daughters, Claudia Duran of Baton Rouge and Ana Duran McDonald (Brendan Weaver); and her cherished grandchildren, Oakley Elena McDonald, Grady Kai McDonald, and Briggs Edmond Weaver, expected in November 2026. She is also survived by her loving mother, Maria Trinidad Luna Pina; and her siblings, Minerva, Guillermo, Leticia, and Arturo Garza Luna, all of Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico. She is preceded in death by her father, Ramon Garza Betancourt, and her brother, Ramon Garza Luna. Above all, Nona was a devoted wife, loving mother, and dedicated homemaker whose greatest joy was caring for her family. She made sure her daughters never doubted how deeply they were loved and cared for, surrounding them with constant affection and encouragement throughout their lives. Her love was the greatest gift she could give. When her family moved to the United States, she refused to let the language barrier keep her from sharing her kindness. She greeted everyone even strangers with a warm smile that spoke louder than words and left lasting impressions on everyone she met. Nona had a deep love for animals, especially cats, whose companionship brought her great comfort and joy. She enjoyed swimming and staying active and found happiness in life's simple moments. Although many miles separated her from her mother and siblings after moving to the United States, the love and close bond they shared never wavered. Through frequent conversations, unwavering support, and cherished memories, they remained a constant source of strength and comfort to one another. Throughout her life, Nona faced epilepsy with remarkable courage and resilience, never allowing it to define her compassionate, generous spirit. Her legacy of strength, kindness, and unconditional love lives on through her family and the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. A memorial service will be held on July 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Revival Temple in Walker, Louisiana, with a reception to follow.
